Blackface, a.k.a. Ahmedu Augustine, a Nigerian singer-songwriter, claims that Asake, a rising star in the Afrobeats genre, unlawfully plagiarised his song.
Plantashun Boiz, a former member of the disbanded musical group, also charged Wizkid and Burna Boy, two luminaries in the field, for stealing intellectual property.
In a recent interview with Naija FM, he levelled the accusation, claiming that Asake sampled his song “Ikebe Supa” for the top-charting song “Joha.”
Blackface identified the song as one of the tracks from his ‘Joha‘ debut album from 2022. He mentioned how offended he felt about Afrobeats stars continuously using his music without his permission. The dancehall star compared the artwork to his child and said that using his music without permission is comparable to child molestation.
He said; “Ginger’ by Wizkid and Burna Boy is a sample of my track ‘Twist & Turn’; the rhythms, the beat, how the melody starts and ends. Na only the verses dem change. Asake’s ‘Joha’ is a sample of my song ‘Ikebe Supa.’ I dey inspire them”.
