Adekunle Gold Reveals the Emotional Story Behind “Simile” — A Song Originally Written for Beyoncé

Adekunle Gold has shared the powerful backstory behind his song “Simile”, a track that was originally created for Beyoncé’s Lion King: The Gift album but never made the cut. The song is now set to appear on his upcoming project, and its history is as moving as the music itself.

What inspired Adekunle Gold to write “Simile”?

The inspiration behind “Simile” came at one of the darkest moments in Adekunle Gold’s life. The singer had just lost his father, and grief had taken away his drive for music. At the same time, Beyoncé’s team had reached out, asking him to contribute to her Lion King project.

In his words, music felt heavy and almost impossible to approach. But one day, he pushed himself into his small home studio and allowed his pain to guide him. That session gave birth to “Simile.”

    What does “Simile” mean?

The word “Simile” comes from Yoruba and translates to “rest on me” or “lean on me.” Adekunle Gold explained that the track was not just another record but his personal cry for comfort and direction during a difficult time.

It captured his grief, his confusion, and his attempt to heal through music. This is why the song felt too personal to give away, even though it was submitted to Beyoncé’s team.

Why wasn’t “Simile” used on Beyoncé’s Lion King project?

Although Adekunle Gold’s team sent the song to Beyoncé, he admitted that he secretly hoped it would not make the final tracklist. The song was far too close to his heart to let go, and in the end, it remained unreleased for years.

Now, instead of being lost on a hard drive, “Simile” will finally reach listeners the way Adekunle Gold always intended — as part of his own album.

When will fans get to hear “Simile”?

Fans will get to hear “Simile” on Adekunle Gold’s upcoming album. While the official release date of the album has not yet been confirmed, the singer has promised that this body of work will be his most personal yet.

Why is “Simile” important to Adekunle Gold’s journey?

“Simile” represents more than just a song; it is a symbol of resilience. It shows how art can be born out of pain and how personal struggles can lead to some of the most meaningful music. For Adekunle Gold, this track is a reminder that even during heartbreak, creativity can be a lifeline.

  • Nigerian superstar Mr Eazi Wants to Buy African Music Catalogues – What It Means for Artists

Nigerian superstar Mr Eazi Wants to Buy African Music Catalogues – What It Means for Artists

Mr Eazi has announced that he’s ready to start buying the music catalogues of African artistes. Through his company, emPawa Africa, he’s calling on musicians, producers, and rights holders who have proof of ownership and at least three years of earnings history to reach out if they are willing to sell part of their catalogue.

This move is making waves in the African music scene because it’s something we often hear happening in the U.S. or Europe, but rarely on the continent. So, what exactly does it mean, and how can African artistes benefit?

See the post made by Mr eazi on x below

What does it mean to sell a music catalogue?

A music catalogue is a collection of songs or recordings that an artiste owns. Selling a catalogue usually means transferring some or all rights to another person or company. This includes the royalties that come from streaming, sales, licensing, and other earnings.

Some artistes sell their full catalogue, while others only sell a percentage of it. For example, an artiste may decide to keep publishing rights but sell the master recordings.

Why is Mr Eazi buying catalogues?

Mr Eazi is not new to investing in African music. Through emPawa Africa, he has supported young artistes with funding, distribution, and promotion. By buying catalogues, he is positioning himself and his company as long-term players in the business of music ownership.

It also helps preserve African music and ensures that African artistes can get fair deals directly on the continent, instead of selling cheaply to foreign companies.

How much is a music catalogue worth?

The value of a catalogue depends on several factors:

    • Earnings history – How much money the songs have made in the last 2–3 years.
    • Streaming performance – Consistent plays on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Boomplay, and YouTube.
    • Evergreen songs – Tracks that continue to bring in income years after release.
    • Publishing and master rights – Whether the artiste owns both or only a share.
    • Legal clarity – Catalogues with clean ownership and no disputes attract higher offers.

Globally, catalogues are often valued at multiples of their yearly income. While deals in Africa may not yet reach the hundreds of millions we hear about abroad, they are growing in demand.

Who can sell to Mr Eazi and emPawa Africa?

According to Mr Eazi, anyone who:

    • Owns an African music catalogue with clear proof of ownership.
    • Has at least three years of earnings history to show.
    • Is open to selling part or all of their catalogue.

Interested artistes or rights holders can contact @emPawaAfrica to begin discussions.

How can this change the African music industry?

This step could encourage more African artistes to see their music as long-term assets. Instead of waiting until international companies show interest, they now have an option to sell within Africa. It may also help educate artistes about rights, royalties, and catalog management, which has been a weak area in the industry.

  • Nigerian superstar Burna Boy Surpasses 20 Billion Global Audio Streams, Becomes Second African Artist to Hit the Milestone

Nigerian superstar Burna Boy Surpasses 20 Billion Global Audio Streams, Becomes Second African Artist to Hit the Milestone

Burna Boy has achieved another global milestone in his career. The Nigerian superstar has now surpassed an estimated 20 billion audio on-demand streams worldwide across all credits, according to Chart Masters. This record cements his place as one of Africa’s most streamed artists of all time, sitting only behind Wizkid.

What does 20 billion global streams mean for Burna Boy?

When people hear about streaming numbers, it can feel abstract. 20 billion streams means Burna Boy’s music has been played on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, Audiomack, and others a combined twenty billion times. It includes streams where he’s the lead artist as well as collaborations where he’s featured.

This places him in the league of globally recognized acts, showing that Afrobeats is no longer just a regional sound but one of the most consumed genres worldwide.

burna boy 20 billion global audio streams
burna boy 20 billion global audio streams

Who is the first African artist to cross 20 billion streams?

The only African artist ahead of Burna Boy is Wizkid, who hit the milestone earlier. Wizkid’s consistency, international collaborations, and the success of songs like Essence have given him a strong lead in global streaming. Burna Boy now joins him as the second African artist to achieve the feat.

How did Burna Boy reach 20 billion streams?

Burna Boy’s catalog is filled with global hits, from Ye to Last Last. His Grammy-winning album Twice As Tall, the critically acclaimed African Giant, and his recent projects have all contributed heavily to his streaming dominance.

Collaborations with artists such as Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, and Justin Bieber have also expanded his reach beyond Africa. His ability to fuse Afrobeats with dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop has made his music appealing to a worldwide audience.

Why is this milestone important for Afrobeats?

Burna Boy’s achievement proves that African music is no longer on the sidelines of the global industry. Reaching 20 billion streams means that millions of listeners across continents are consistently playing Afrobeats. This kind of global recognition opens more doors for Nigerian and African artists, making it easier for them to tour, sell out stadiums, and collaborate with international stars.

Burna Boy vs Wizkid: Who is bigger globally?

This milestone will naturally spark debates. Wizkid has longevity and a global fanbase built over more than a decade. Burna Boy, on the other hand, has been on an unstoppable rise in recent years, becoming a festival headliner and selling out arenas worldwide.

Both artists are carrying Afrobeats to new levels, and fans will keep comparing their achievements. What’s clear is that the success of both Burna Boy and Wizkid is shaping the future of African music globally.

  • Rema’s “FUN” Hits 962,000 Spotify Streams on Its First Day

Rema’s “FUN” Hits 962,000 Spotify Streams on Its First Day

Rema has once again shown why he is one of the biggest stars in Afrobeats. His latest single, “FUN,” recorded 962,000 streams on Spotify in just the first 24 hours after release on September 5, 2025. This early streaming performance highlights his strong global presence and loyal fan base.

How many streams did Rema’s “FUN” get on its first day?

According to official Spotify numbers shared by tracking accounts, “FUN” earned 962,082 streams on its release day. This made it one of the strongest debuts for an African artist on the platform this year.

Why is 962,000 streams in one day impressive?

For an African artist, crossing close to a million streams on the first day is a big deal. Most Afrobeats singles take weeks before they reach that number. Rema achieving it in a single day shows how much global listeners anticipate his music. It also puts him in the same league as international stars who dominate Spotify’s daily charts.

How has “FUN” performed after release?

Streaming updates show that the track continued to pull strong numbers after its release day:

    Day 1: 962,082 streams

    Day 2: 673,637 streams

    Day 3: 560,342 streams

This steady run means the song is likely to cross millions within the first week.

What makes Rema’s “FUN” stand out?

Fans describe the track as energetic, catchy, and built for repeat play. Rema has mastered the balance between Afrobeats and international pop, and “FUN” carries that blend perfectly. The song’s bounce, delivery, and relatable vibe make it an easy favorite for playlists and radio rotations.

Is Rema breaking records with “FUN”?

While “FUN” may not have set an all-time Spotify record, it is among the strongest first-day streaming numbers for an Afrobeats artist in 2025. For comparison, many big African releases average between 200K–500K streams on opening day. Rema almost doubled that figure.

  • The story behind uchemelenze latest track “Dey play”

The story behind uchemelenze latest track “Dey play”

Uchemelenze Dey play is a song written and recorded by uchemelenze and this post talks about the inspiration and true story behind uchemelenze Dey play

After months of anticipation, Uchemelenze has finally released his most awaited track titled “Dey Play”. But beyond the beats and the lyrics, the song carries a raw backstory of pain, betrayal, survival, and triumph.

Earlier today, I was with Uchemelenze as he explained the real-life struggles that inspired Dey Play. His words were heavy, filled with memories of close friends and life-threatening experiences that shaped him into the artist he is today.

Related: Lady P (ye ye )and Uchemelenze Bring Afro Vibes and Street Rap Energy in “Pitakwa Sugar Mummy”

    The Struggles and Early Losses

According to Uchemelenze, life in the music business has never been easy. Starting out in port harcourt township, he faced jealousy, envy, and constant roadblocks. He recalled how some artists tried to rise but never made it out. Painful examples include the likes of Dj jamo _ tha ibz, V.I. Kelly, Decorage, Vinta 60 and Jaja d Don (R.I.P.) — young talents whose journeys were cut short too soon.

For Uchemelenze, these losses weren’t just stories; they were reminders of how dangerous and unpredictable the journey can be.

    The “Calabar Belt” Sickness

In the lyrics Uchemelenze said: I no be Anthony Joshua but they call me a champion my reward na “calabar belt” if no be Jaja d Don, terry unique, Sparta Roy,(I for don kick bucket)

At one point, Uchemelenze faced what he described as the “Calabar belt,” a strange sickness that almost claimed his life. He said it felt like a spiritual attack, something sent to break him down when he was just trying to do his own thing.

uchemelenze dey play song struggle survival real life
uchemelenze dey play song struggle survival real life

During this dark period, a few people stood by him — names like Nature prince, terry unique, Sparta Roy, and Jaja d Don (R.I.P.) and few of his friends and love ones played a role in supporting him. Even though Jaja d Don (R.I.P.) is gone now, Uchemelenze remembers him as a real one who stood with him during tough times. Against all odds, Uchemelenze survived.

    The Masquerade Incident

In the lyrics he said: Ekpo chase me, Wan fall my hand, but as him chase, him hand come fall him face come show, him hand come fall….

Another story that shaped Dey Play was when Uchemelenze attended a masquerade play. Things took a dangerous turn when one of the masquerades expected something from him — possibly money — but Uchemelenze had nothing to offer.

Offended, the masquerade picked up a machete and attempted to attack him. Uchemelenze ran for his life as the masquerade gave chase. But then, fate intervened — the masquerade stumbled, fell, injured his toe badly, and his mask dropped to the ground.

The crowd immediately turned their energy towards Uchemelenze, lifting him up and hailing him. To them, he had been saved from harm, a sign that destiny was on his side.

The Betrayal at Ebonyi state Show

In the lyrics uchemelenze said: igwe Agrrey call me for show, them pass my back go the show, stupid niggers think say I know go know now everything don gbolo Dey play…..

Uchemelenze said Igwe Agrrey once met him and told him, “I don’t have silver or gold to give you, but I have show connection for you. But I won’t reveal it to you

As they kept getting along, months passed. During December of that same year, Uchemelenze got a call from igwe Agrrey letting him to know that the show will be in January the next year.

The planned show with Igwe Agrrey originally included entertainers like DJ Play Boi, Vinta 60 (R.I.P), Oliver, MP2, and Uchemelenze. But along the line, things took another turn.

Someone else suddenly became the chairman of the planning committee for the Ebonyi State show and even went ahead to take money from Igwe Agrrey, According to uchemelenze the day they where supposed to travel to Ebonyi state for the event he was having some financial challenges at the time which he already lost his phone during this period.

So before departure he told DJ Uzo best that he should call him when they are about to depart for the journey that he wants to go and meet his mother(R.I.P) for some financial assistance, but before Uchemelenze could return from the short trip to meet his mother (R.I.P) they have departed and kept his bag at bimo bar Agrrey road.

Uchemelenze said that immediately he came back and saw his bag, he called DJ Uzo Best, who picked up and told him that they had already started the journey. Then Melenze called Young Kaze, who confirmed that they had already gone past Port Harcourt Shopping Mall (SPAR).

Filled with anger and grief, when he got to Cemetery Junction, he saw the car coming out from Victoria Street to Agrrey Road.

Out of anger, Melenze stopped the car, and the person who had boycotted Uchemelenze from the show came out. After a long argument and grief-filled with exchanges, of words the car’s side mirror broke.

The driver, now angry, said he wanted to go back and park his car since things had turned violent. Uchemelenze then placed his bag inside the car, and the driver drove off to park at Bimo Bar.

However, instead of stopping there, they diverted through another street and continued the journey without Uchemelenze.

In the end, Uchemelenze was refused from attending the show.

It was a huge event that featured big names like Phyno, Jeriq, Ruff Coin (Nwa Aba), and several local rappers. Uchemelenze had been excited, thinking it was his chance to shine, but betrayal struck and left him behind.

But along the way, betrayal struck leaving him behind, cutting him off from the opportunity that could have pushed his career forward. For Uchemelenze, this was one of the hardest pills to swallow — being sidelined by those he trusted.

    Related: Uchemelenze Biography and Origins

All these moments — the sickness, the masquerade incident, the betrayal, and the painful memories of fallen comrades — came together to inspire “Dey Play”.

For Uchemelenze, the track is not just another song. It’s a reflection of real-life struggle, a tribute to survival, and a reminder that no matter how hard the street gets, the dream must continue.
